WARNING: This may be shocking to hear.
Perfectionism is Ruining Your Life.
The first time I was told, “You are a perfectionist” I was completely speechless. It took me over a decade to finally hit rock bottom – as a result of my perfectionism – before I realized just how bad things had gotten.
Now, if you are a perfectionist, this does not mean you have to change who you are and forgo your perfectionistic tendencies (and high-achiever status). If you are anything like me when I was first told I was a perfectionist, I wore that like a badge of honor. My identity was deeply entangled with my perfectionism. Maybe you have a similar feeling about it?
Before you spiral, it is important to re-channel your high-achiever status to work FOR YOU – not against you.
Once I began to set realistic expectations for myself – and others – I slowly started to feel better. As I learned to be content with myself, I found happiness. Slowly, I was able to shed my protective barrier, also known as perfectionism. I now use my high-achiever, perfectionistic tendencies to work for me.
This process takes time, however. There is no quick fix or fast track to getting to this place. That reason is why I started Bring About Happy. Now, I am on a mission to help others overcome the same struggle!
I want you to know, there is an answer to your problems.
- Here are some keys to finding — and keeping — happiness:
- Learn to love yourself as you are — right here, right now with no strings attached.
- Embrace who you are — flaws & all!
- Find the positives in your life and express your gratitude for what you have.
- Let go of what you can’t control.
As you learn to soften your perfectionistic tendencies, your life will improve. You will no longer struggle the same. Perfectionism will no longer ruin your life.
